Spain named the best country for holidays thanks to the number of tourist attractions, flights and its high safety score

SPAIN has been named the best country to visit in the world thanks in part to the huge number of attractions it can offer.

Also in the top ten were Brits favourites, including France, Italy and the US.

The ranking of a 140 destinations was compiled by the (WEF) as part of its Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index.

The index gives a score to all the countries based on a number of things that would affect visitors, including the availability of flights to the country, value for money, and travel safety.

Spain is holding the top spot for the third year running thanks to a high overall score.

Surprisingly, it didn't score very highly for value for money - Kazakhstan won the top spot for that.

But the country did rank highly for safety and security, tourism infrastructure (including number of hotels, flights and ground transport) and attractions for visitors.

One of the areas that the Index highlighted was its natural and cultural resources - in other words the stunning beaches in the likes of Majorca and Tenerife that Brits love and cultural landmarks such as La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona or the Royal Palace in Madrid.

In the overall rankings, Spain was followed by France and Germany and then Japan in fourth place.

In this edition of the index, the UK slid down one position to number six and was overtaken by the US at number five.

According to WEF, this was down to a decrease in "digital demand" - or the number of searches online.

The report explained that while digital demand doesn't equal to the number of visitors, the trends are very similar.

The rest of the list is made up of Australia, Italy, Canada and Switzerland.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the worst country to visit according to the rankings is Yemen, number 140.

It was followed by nations including Chad, Liberia, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
