HOLIDAY HELL

Gatwick Airport chaos as passengers forced to wait ‘FOUR HOURS’ for luggage in summer getaway mayhem

Hundreds of passengers were left standing for hours as they waited for their baggage

HUNDREDS of holidaymakers travelling through Gatwick airport were left stranded for hours after the baggage system failed.

The fault forced weary passengers from ten flights to wait for their luggage into the early hours of this morning after the handlers reportedly struggled with demand.

Travellers in the north and south terminals were said to have been left waiting for four hours.

It is understood the problem began last night and lasted into the early hours.

Some passengers claimed they were given with no water and little information.

Gatwick Airport apologised for the issue which it said affected passengers from ten flights.

A spokesman said: “This morning, Saturday, July 20, unfortunately ten flights at Gatwick waited on average two hours for their baggage to be returned, due to shortage of staff at Menzies, a baggage handling provider contracted by some of our airlines.

“We apologise for this disappointing and unacceptable wait our passengers experienced and we did all we could to make passengers comfortable in the meantime.”

The debacle came after thousands of British Airways passengers were left waiting at Heathrow for several hours on Thursday because of a fault in the baggage system.

Meanwhile Ryanair passengers were warned they could be hit by delays and disruption in the wake of proposed strikes at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted later this month.

The unwelcome news came as Brit tourists were told they could also face a money "shock" on their summer holidays as sterling slid to a two year-low amid uncertainty over Brexit.
