You can get free theme park tickets from Alton Towers, Thorpe Park and Drayton Manor if it rains when you visit
A hidden rule means you can get a free ticket to visit the park again if you are struck with bad weather
AS the UK faces the wettest August on record, families planning day trips during their summer holidays may be disappointed when visiting an attraction for the day.
Yet what they may not realise is that it could result in a free theme park ticket.
Some UK theme parks have a little-known rule where you can get free tickets to go back if you visit on a particularly rainy day.
Look out for Bad Weather Guarantee or Rainy Day Guarantee in the small print, which will generally offer visitors a free ticket for another day - although there are normally terms and conditions to accompany this perk.
We've rounded up some of the major theme parks around the UK that have a rainy day rule:
Alton Towers
, guests who have more than an hour of rain during their day at Alton Towers are able to claim another ticket to the park for free.
The website explains: "If it rains continuously for more than an hour during your visit to Alton Towers Theme Park, you can return on a like for like visit for free.
"Only applicable on online tickets which state that they are eligible for the Rainy Day Guarantee."
Guests who buy their tickets in advance are able to claim a ticket, not those who buy them on the door - and a second ticket cannot be redeemed if it rains again.
So far this year, April 4 was the only day it has been eligible for - so if you were at the park on that day then you can get a free ticket.
Last year, there were 14 rainy days between April and October, which were eligible for the guarantee.
Drayton Manor
offer a similar scheme, although with more restrictions.
Rainy day tickets are only eligible if it rains for more than two hours continuously from March to September and guests can only return in June or September.
Guests need to email [email protected].uk to book a ticket for a return date.
Thorpe Park
give out free tickets for more than an hour of rain and their police is called the Island Return Guarantee.
This states: "If Bad Weather affects the ride offering for an hour or more during your visit, we'll give you a free return visit on selected dates in 2019."
Guests can simply turn up on the day with their previous ticket to get free entry for a second day.
However, guests can only return between April 1 and May 26, and September 2 to September 30.
Annual pass-holders cannot claim a refund, but are able to get one free Priority Ride Pass if they were affected.
Chessington World of Adventures
guests can return if they experience rain for more than an hour during their visit.
The website states: "Our new and improved Rainy Day Guarantee is here to help make sure you get a great day out, even if the weather isn't too good."
The list of dates guests can return ranges from March to October so it is worth checking the website.
Annual pass-holders are not eligible.
