A UNITED Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing after two of the cockpit screens went blank mid-air as pilots feared they could have lost them all if they carried on flying.

Flight 4390 was travelling from Knoxville, Tennessee to Houston, Texas, when the issue occurred, forcing the plane to land in Dallas instead.

Passengers were travelling on a Bombardier CRJ-200 plane with ExpressJet, who operate under United Airlines.

In a , the pilot can be heard saying: "So you may be able to see we lost two of our screens.

"Now if we kept flying, we'd lose them all, eventually, because there's not enough cooling.

"There is tremendous heat behind the screen.

"This dictates that we land as soon as possible because if we have to continue, we'd eventually be flying blind.

"So that's why we're in Dallas right now. It is unlikely this aircraft is going anywhere tonight."

Twitter user Rodney Giles posted the video on social media, explaining his parents were on the flight when it happened.

The pilots also said that the gate agents were informed they were coming and were working on solving the problem.

, the flight landed safely and the 50 passengers on board were booked onto a different flight to continue their journey to Houston.

Pilots must be able to act calmly under pressure and change plans at the last minute, according to a Thomas Cook pilot.

Pilot Vicky McCarthy previously told Sun Online Travel that bad weather and storms can easily change the course of the flight, but aren't always a danger.

One thing pilots aren't allowed to do is talk to each other if the plane is below 10,000 feet, along with eating or listening to music as it is a "critical phase of the flight".

Sun Online Travel has contacted United Airlines for comment.
