Located just north of Palacio de Congresos, the 2.5m sqm new complex will be named the Intu Costa del Sol .

The development plans will include the different neighbourhoods alongside 250,000 sqm of parks and gardens.

Two hotels and 70 restaurants are also included in the plans, along with 20 leisure attractions such as a wave pool, aquarium and climbing area as well as a concert and circus venue.

A Ferris wheel and a beach club will be part of the attraction, hoping to entice 30 million visitors a year.

The Costa del Sol currently attracts 12.4 million tourists a year with it being a popular holiday destination for Brits.

The attraction will also focus on sustainability – with at least 20 per cent of the materials used to construct the resort being recycled – and use renewable energy.

The resort faced years of set backs, including over disagreements regarding the effect on current infrastructure and water systems according to The Olive Press.

In light of the problems, the developers have introduced a water recycling system to aid the greenery in the complex, which will require very little water thanks to the native plants.

The Costa del Sol complex joins Xanadú and Zaragoza in Spain as part of their development projects with new plans including Valencia, Vigo and Palma.

Other projects planned for Spain include a new theme park called Elysium City, which will be a “smart city”.

Just three hours south of Madrid, the new Disney-level resort is scheduled to open in 2023.
