We explain what the five world’s busiest airports by passenger traffic are based on the Civil Aviation Data Analysis’ half-year figures for 2018.
1 – Hartfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
For the first-half of 2018, 52,640,000 passengers travelled through the southern airport.
The airport is named two of Atlanta’s former mayors William B. Hartsfield and Maynard Jackson.
It has 209 domestic and international gates and has five parallel runways.
Also known as Atlanta Airport, it has been the world’s busiest airport for passenger traffic every year since 2000.
It is a hub for Delta Air Lines.
2 – Beijing Capital International Airport
For the first-half of 2018, 49,380,000 passengers travelled through the Chinese capital’s airport.
The airport has become Asia’s busiest airport for passengers since 2009.
Since 2012, it has become the 13th busiest airport in the word for cargo traffic.
It is a hub for Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Hainan Airlines.
It has three terminals.
3 – Dubai International Airport
For the first-half of 2018, 43,740,000 passengers travelled through the Middle Eastern airport.
The airport is the sixth-busiest cargo airport in the world.
It is a hub for Emirates airline and flydubai airline.
The airport has three terminals and its Terminal 3 is the second-largest building in the world by floor space.
Terminal 3 is also the largest airport terminal in the world.
4 – Los Angeles International Airport
For the first-half of 2018, 42,380,000 passengers travelled through the Californian airport.
It is the US’ second-busiest airport, and it is the largest and busiest international airport on the US West Coast.
It is a hub for Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines.
LAX is a hub for more passenger airlines than any other airport in the US.
It has nine terminals and 129 gates.

5 – Tokyo Haneda Airport
For the first-half of 2018, 41,060,000 passengers travelled through the Japanese airport.
It is the third busiest airport in Asia.
It is a hub for Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airlines, Skymark Airlines, Air Do, Solaseed Air and StarFlyer.
It has three terminals, Terminal 1 and 2 are for domestic flights and Terminal 3 is for international flights.
Before the airport opened in 1931, aviators would use the beaches as airstrips.
The land was purchased in 1930 to convert it into an airport.
