Adults-only break in Fuerteventura will banish winter blues with sunshine and swaying palm trees

The island enjoys warms, dry and windy weather all year round and temperatures in the high teens even in January

STRETCHING out in the shade by the pool at the H10 Ocean Dunas in Corralejo, Furteventura, I am staring up at an azure blue sky and swaying palm trees.

It took just four hours and 40 minutes to swap wet and windy London for this sunlounger in the sunshine — and I am not sure if I’ll be moving for the next week.

This place is just perfect for a fly-and-flop trip to escape the winter blues.

Fuerteventura enjoys warm, dry and windy weather all year round and even in the darkest days of January and February you will be treated to temperatures in the high teens and little chance of rain.

And the H10 Ocean Dunas is an ideal adult-only escape.

To the left is a beautiful sandy beach and clear water to splash around in, while a right turn will take you to the town’s busy high street — its hustle and bustle a stark contrast to the hotel’s peace and quiet.

Even if fully booked, there’s no chance of Ocean Dunas feeling overcrowded with just 79 rooms — opt for a garden or swimming pool view for the best outlook and, if you can, the junior suites are definitely worth the upgrade.

There is no fighting over a sunbed or space at dinner. Instead the hotel feels like your very own private villa.

Recently renovated, the accommodation is stylish, modern and understated with quality furnishings. In the larger bedrooms, indulge in a heavenly king-size bed that will make it hard to leave.

Even check-in is made stress-free as you sit on comfy seats with a complimentary prosecco in hand.

Whether you opt for B&B or half- board, there’s a decent buffet breakfast with plenty of choice.

At night, the a la carte dinner involves a starter from the buffet before your main course is delivered to the table. The menu is a little limited but we were impressed with the reasonably priced drinks.

Step just a few hundred yards away and there’s a whole host of lively bars and restaurants offering delicious lunches, a nightcap or even a boozy karaoke evening to make new friends. Music Square, in the north of the town, has live entertainment most nights.

By day, there’s plenty to keep you busy in town, including a decent shopping centre with all your favourite Spanish clothing brands such as Zara, Mango and Bershka which will have you leaving with a heavier suitcase and lighter purse.

A ten-minute bus ride will take you to Corralejo’s sand dunes.

With miles of near-white beaches and stunning volcanic landscapes, Parque Natural de las Dunas really is spectacular to behold.

The dunes to the south of the park are the largest in the Canary Islands and to the north there’s the rugged, red and ochre volcanic Montana Roja or red mountain to explore.

Venture further afield and there are 152 beaches to enjoy with 31 miles of white sand. Also worth a trip is the Oasis Park Fuerteventura — a nature reserve in the south of the island that’s home to more than 3,000 animals and a botanical garden.

But let’s face it. Give me a lounger by the pool at Ocean Dunas, a cocktail and a good book and that is my type of fly-and-flop heaven.
