PARIS’ Gare du Nord station is going to be rebuilt so it can cope with the longer queues and passport checks that Brexit will bring.
French rail company SNCF has revealed plans to overhaul the station to face “the challenges of reinforced border controls due to Brexit”.
reports that passengers travelling between London and Paris currently benefit from the Treaty of Le Touquet, which means that passport checks happen when passengers get onto the train.
They are then able to walk out of the station freely when they arrive, but Brexit could stop that from happening - with passengers having to queue up to be checked on arrival.
Passengers may also have to apply for visas to visit Europe.
Labour MP Gareth Thomas who campaigns for Best for Britain said: “This is concrete evidence of the lengthy and costly delays that will be caused by Brexit."
He continued: “We don’t have the cash to throw around rebuilding stations – not when people in this country are struggling to feed themselves and public services like schools, hospitals and police forces are being cut.
“We can stop this. We need a people’s vote on the Brexit deal, with the option to stay in the EU.”
In Holland, Rotterdam port and Schiphol airport have announced they too have plans for an overhaul to cope with the increased busyness around passport control after Brexit.
