THE new jewel in the crown of Blackpool Pleasure Beach - the ICON rollercoaster - is opening this weekend.

Millions have been spent on what is the UK's first ever double-launch rollercoaster, reaching heights of 88.5ft, with drops of up to 82ft.

Adrenaline junkies get two powerful thrusts of acceleration during the thrilling ride, which snakes over and around 15 of the park's other rides, including The Big One.

The Sun's Jessica Lester headed to the park to try the ride out before it opens to the public, here's her verdict...

"Blackpool is already the home to some of the world's best rollercoasters - but now they've created a ride that truly is a thrill seekers paradise.

"The ICON may not have gimmicks like flames and flashing lights, but the hurtling speed and loop-de-loops are terrifyingly fun.

"If you're afraid of coasters, the fast paced and flowing ride, based on the falling blossoms of a Japanese cherry tree, may not be for you.

"But for those looking for something equally scary as the iconic Big One, but with a lot of modern twists - the experience is not one to be missed.

"Weaving in and out of the existing rides, the approach to ICON mimics a peaceful walk through a Japanese garden.

"The peace is quickly interrupted by hurtling cars racing overhead, filled with the screams of excitement and fear from it's riders.

The 82ft drop brings terrifying screams as the ride builds towards the second launch pad, a UK first, with a velocity faster than a commercial aeroplane

"As the carriage pulls away from the station, there if a short pause just long enough to catch your breath before speeding away at almost 50mph.

"Plunging into darkness and then emerging through the smoke, the ride forms loops taking you upside-down in one swift swoop.

"Slowing at the peak of the 88 foot climb, an immense view of the Blackpool pleasure beach comes into view, if you're brave enough to open your eyes.

"Before you know it, the ride is over - and you're wanting to experience the white-knuckle ride again and again, until you know each twist and turn.

"Blackpool Pleasure Beach's £16.2million coaster may not be the fastest out there, but the double launch, causing two shots of G force, is a unique experience.

"The five year project, which took almost two years to build, was thought up by Amanda Thompson OBE, the managing director of the park.

"She said the inspiration for the 2,250 horse power ride came to her in a strange dream, in which she pictured a 'cherry blossom tree'.

"Whilst the ICON isn't as gentle as the falling flowers, the ride is one that you'll want to experience year after year like blossoming trees."
