Egypt sees huge rise in UK tourists this year – up by 39% compared to 2017

Price conscious Brits have been turning their backs on Spain so far this year - favouring Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt instead

EGYPT has seen a surge of popularity among British holidaymakers.

Figures revealed to Sun Online Travel by the Egypt Tourism Board show the country welcomed 61,481 UK visitors between January and February this year.

That's an increase of 39.1 per cent compared to the same period last year.

The country welcomed 319,388 British holidaymakers over the course of 2017, which was an increase of 38 per cent compared to the previous year.

Price conscious Brits have been turning their backs on Spain so far this year - favouring Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt instead.

Thomas Cook have revealed that the shift east from Spain has come as a result of raising hotel prices in the country.

resorts are still popular.

Brits have recently been flocking to the resorts of Marsa Alam and Hurghada instead.

Some UK tourists are also still heading to Sharm, getting around the flight ban by travelling via Cairo or Istanbul.

Because of the drop in tourist numbers over the last few years, hotels have slashed their prices.
