Egypt sees huge rise in UK tourists this year – up by 39% compared to 2017

EGYPT has seen a surge of popularity among British holidaymakers.

Figures revealed to Sun Online Travel by the Egypt Tourism Board show the country welcomed 61,481 UK visitors between January and February this year.

That's an increase of 39.1 per cent compared to the same period last year.

The country welcomed 319,388 British holidaymakers over the course of 2017, which was an increase of 38 per cent compared to the previous year.

The strong demand for holidays to Spain in recent years was largely fuelled by safety concerns in the Middle East.

While travel to Sharm El Sheikh has been suspended since December 2015, after a Russian passenger plane was blown out of the sky killing 224 people, other Red Sea
resorts are still popular.

Brits have recently been flocking to the resorts of Marsa Alam and Hurghada instead.

Some UK tourists are also still heading to Sharm, getting around the flight ban by travelling via Cairo or Istanbul.

Because of the drop in tourist numbers over the last few years, hotels have slashed their prices.

This means that you can get a seven-night stay in .

Across the bay in Hurghada, tourists can find a double room on a for a week’s stay.
