She told her followers: "Here is a hotel hack that I just learned today.

"So, you know hotels now mainly have card readers, and you have to put your hotel key card into it to get the electricity to work?

"It's really annoying when you want to charge something - and I think a lot of us know the trick way to put another card into it - I usually use a gift card that I have in my purse.

"But, today I was walking past one of the rooms as the maid was doing it up and I saw what she did - and oh my God, I can't believe it, I have to try it to see if it works!"

She said the cleaner used the do not disturb sign - and it worked just as well.

People in her comments were just as stunned, with one saying they had tried this trick to make sure the "air con stays on".

She posted a picture of her Waitrose loyalty card in the slot instead – and revealed it did the trick.

She added: “I turned off all the lights manually, as not to be too wasteful, just needed to bump up the old battery pack for an hour or two.”

The picture was retweeted hundreds of times, with some people calling the revelation the "hack of the century".

Even hotel workers have been amazed by the trick.
