Hare and Hounds, Levens – village pub near Lake District serves up top Cumbrian ales and hospitality
Under half an hour's drive from Windermere, this proper pub with rooms offers great grub and plenty of character
WHAT'S IT LIKE?
The Hare & Hounds is a beautiful 16th-century coaching inn in the pretty village of Levens, in the Lyth Valley, right on the edge of the Lake District.
ROOMS ANY GOOD?
They are fantastic.
There are four, each individually styled with some lovely touches.
They include fresh coffee, digital radio oh, and those homemade brownies.
EAT HERE OR GRAB A PIZZA?
You can do both!
The restaurant here makes impressive pizzas to order.
And for goodness' sake, don't miss out on the included breakfast.
As for the rest of the menu, the stated aim is "simple and delicious".
And, boy, does it deliver on that front.
We came here in December, so we can also vouch for Christmas meals.
And despite the slightly disturbing name, the Dirty Burger is among the best burgers I have ever tasted.
WHAT ELSE?
Try exploring one of the most beautiful regions on the planet.
You are less than half an hour's drive from Windermere.
And Kendal is a great town too.
SO YOU'D GO BACK?
Without a doubt.
The Hare & Hounds is also a superb pub, offering the best Cumbrian ales and hospitality.
Its popular quiz nights are a hoot too.
