FORGET the grotto in your local shopping centre ... for a Christmas to remember, take the kids on a day trip to meet Santa in person in Lapland.

Thomas Cook is offering the festive 15-hour, 4,000-mile round trip over the Christmas period, flying from 10 airports across the UK, including Leeds / Bradford and East Midlands.

Arriving into Rovanieni, Finland, the whistle-stop trip to Santa's home includes reindeer rides and husky sledding - as well as a meet and greet with the main man himself.

There is plenty of time for the kids to play in the snow, and maybe even be a chance to spot the unearthly beauty of the Northern Lights before you hop on your flight home.

You can also arrange to send letters home from Santa through Santa's special Post Office.

But costing from £396 per person it's not for those on a strict budget.

You'll need to wrap up warm too - the average temperature in Lapland in December is -6C, but can dip as low as -40C.

There's no fear of frostbite though, as holidaymakers will be provided with thermal suits and snow boots - along with a hearty, warming lunch and hot drinks.

You are still advised to pack plenty of thermal layers including hats, scarves, socks and gloves though.

The trip, named Santa's Sleigh Day, sets off in the morning and promises a full day of activities before returning later in the night.

Longer stays offered include a 'Sleigh-bell sleepover' which includes a night at the Sokos Hotel Vaakuna in Rovaniemi, as well as a snowmobile trip and reindeer lassoing, priced at £485 per person.

Currently  and the tour operator is offering £100 off the holiday by entering the code WINTER.

The discount also applies to longer trips to Lapland made through Thomas Cook, Expedia or directly from the Santa's Lapland website.
