TRAVELLING with young kids is often a complete nightmare  - leaving you feeling like you haven't had a holiday at all.

Whether it’s in a car, train, plane or boat, they need plenty of distractions to keep them occupied.

But instead of shelling out wads of cash on travel games and toys, there’s one super cheap supermarket item that savvy parents swear by: the balloon.

A parent on Reddit discovered the travelling tip and wanted to share it with other parents.

She buys a packet of balloons, which can be bought for around £1 online or at the supermarket, before going on holiday and they keep her child busy for hours.

Thecalled Orchid_breeder said: “Many times I have been saved travelling with balloons.

“We’ve played with them in a hotel room when the kid need to get energy out, and when I had a plane that was delayed at O’Hare [airport, in Chicago] I was able to whip out a balloon that was in my carry on & blow it up.

“We found a gate that was empty and played volleyball over the seats for 90 minutes before the plane boarded.

“There’s almost infinite games you can invent with a balloon, and they work as well for 15 year olds as they do for two year olds.”

The balloon can also be tied to a child's wrist to make them easy to spot in a busy place.

Some parents cautioned that balloons did cause a choking hazard though and suggested buying a fabric cover to prevent any accidents.

Another parent revealed that they did the same with an inflatable beach ball to lessen the risk of choking.

They said: “You can inflate them in an empty-ish gate of a layover airport to get some good run-around time in, then deflate them again to board.”
