The grim reason why you should never use the hotel room hairdryer
NEXT time you go on holiday, you should pack sure to pack your own hairdryer, according to experts.
A study has revealed the dirtiest parts of the rooms - and the humble hairdryer was one of the worst.
In the study for microbiologist Charles Gerba tested nine hotel rooms across Los Angeles, ranging from three to five stars.
In most hotel rooms, the hairdryer had even more germs than the toilet seat.
It is thought that the problem occurs because cleaners tend to focus on items like the toilet, bath and sink in a hotel bathroom.
Much like light switches and room service menus, the hairdryer is touched by many guest hands but not seen as a dirty item.
This means that they become increasingly dirty over an extended period of time.
He said: “There must be some things you can do with a hairdryer that I am not aware of because some of them were pretty germy.”
MORE ON HOTELS
It isn't the only disgusting part of your hotel room.
Former hotel manager Chris Johnston revealed to that the air conditioning unit is one thing you might want to avoid using when you’re staying at a hotel.
He said: "One often overlooked source of... germs is the HVAC unit in the room.
"If hotel staff fail to clean the filters (or at least clean the top visible portion), simply turning on the unit can cause these particles to fill your room and your lungs."
You should also never sit on the hotel room chairs without putting something on top of it.
Experts have explained that because they are hard to clean properly, unlike bedding and towels which are washed at a high heat, they hold a range of germs that can make you sick.
With cleaning staff also being short on time when cleaning an entire room between guests, the comfortable chair often gets overlooked.
