American airport travellers can now get takeaway food delivered DIRECTLY to their boarding gate

AIRPORTS are stressful places – after grabbing some food and picking up extra toiletries for the trip you are inevitably left with minutes to spare before boarding closes.

But that stressful run to the gate could soon be a thing of the past, thanks to a new app that delivers takeaway food and drink to your boarding gate.

A new app has launched in America called Airport Sherpa,  which will deliver food, drinks and other items from airport shops to your seat.

The service, which starts this week at Baltimore-Washington International Airport, charges a delivery fee of between $3.99 (£3.10) and $7.99 (£6.21).

Customers will be able to order food or items from stores across the airport – so even if a traveller’s preferred restaurant is in a different terminal, they won’t have to miss out on their favourite meal.

To help avoid flight delays, the app also has precautions put in place to make sure that delivery takes place before gate staff announce that the flight is boarding.

It also allows customers to order food to pick up and includes walking directions with smart time estimates to ensure travellers can get a bite to eat and make their flight.

Currently available on iOS, Airport Sherpa say they have plans to expand the app to other airports soon.

From August, passengers in San Diego International Airport will be able to use a similar service called .

The app promises to deliver items to travellers within a 10-minute window for a fee of $6.99 (£5.44).

We’re not clear on why anyone would order food to their gate instead of just eating at the terminal – after all, it can be impossible to find a seat.

But for busy business travellers it could mean an end to choosing between grabbing a coffee and making their flight.

There is no word yet on how long this will take to get to UK airports though.
