The artwork, by the Argentina-born Italian sculptor and painter Lucio Fontana, is called "Concetto spaziale" which translates as Spatial concept.

After hailing a cab in the French capital, the man put it for safe keeping in the boot, but forgot about it when he arrived at his destination in the 11th arondissement, where he was meeting an art dealer.

He has since tried to get hold of the taxi in order to reclaim the art, but when that proved unsuccessful, he reported it as a theft instead.

A statement has since been filed with the city police.
