CITY... BREAK THE HABIT

The city swaps that will guarantee you a more relaxing and cheaper holiday

We've found alternatives to cities like New York, Dubai and Rome, which are just as fun but won't break the bank

Instead of Rome, try out Bologna - a medieval city in Italy with great architecture and food

CITY breaks are one of the most popular types of holiday, but often the popular destinations can end up packed with tourists and costing a fortune.

If travellers are willing to think a little bit outside the box, they’ll find that swapping one city for a slightly smaller destination could end up providing a much more relaxing, and cheaper, vacation.

Here, Sun Online has taken a look at some of the most popular city break destinations for Brits and sourced a similar option.

Sometimes the alternative is just the second largest city in a country, at other times it is in another nation entirely.

So if you’re thinking about organising a little getaway this summer, read on for some inspiration…

Rome vs Bologna

While Rome is, without a doubt, an incredible city break destination that is filled with history and great food, it is also pricey and extremely busy.

Instead, try out Bologna - a medieval city in Italy with beautiful palaces and incredible artwork.

It is also known for its food – Bologna is the birthplace of the spaghetti bolognese and they still make the best in the world.

Dubai vs Muscat

In the last couple of decades, Dubai has become one of the top destinations for British holidaymakers, who love the weather, swanky hotels and excellent shopping.

However, for a Middle Eastern trip without skyscrapers, Muscat is ideal.

The port city in Oman is known for its beautiful traditional architecture and the famous Muttrah Souk, which is a shopaholic’s paradise.

Amsterdam vs Rotterdam

Amsterdam’s beautiful architecture, picturesque canals, friendly locals and unique nightlife mean it is a top destination for people from all over the world.

But for a quieter holiday with all of the above, Rotterdam won’t disappoint.

The arty neighbourhoods that fill the city mean that there are plenty of top notch museums and galleries, and the famous Dutch architecture is also everywhere.

The nightclub and restaurant scene has also begun to draw significant interest.

New York vs Boston

For a cheaper and far less busy option than New York, try heading to Boston instead

While the weakened pound and strong dollar might have made New York a less attractive proposition recently, it is still a top city break destination for Brits.

But for a cheaper and far less busy option, try heading to Boston, just up the coast instead.

Instead of the Yankees, they have the Red Sox, and instead of MOMA they have the Museum of Fine Art.

If neither of those float your boat, the Bostonions are crazy for their craft beer.

Vienna vs Salzburg

Vienna is the capital of Austria and the beautiful architecture and grand culture make it a popular short city break.

It’s not cheap though, and a weekend away will require deep pockets.

For a cheaper option, try Salzburg, a city with views of the eastern Alps that is also packed with beautiful traditional architecture.

Lisbon vs Porto

Lisbon’s beautiful weather, attractive buildings and tasty food make it popular among Brits of all ages, but the city can become very busy during peak periods.

Instead, head to Porto, a coastal city with both quaint winding streets and grand plaza squares.

In the evening, the city comes alive with restaurants and bars – be sure to try some of the famous port.
