The Foreign Office still advises Britons to avoid the Middle East country.

But Untamed Borders is eyeing a return.

Founder James Willcox said: “We hope to be resuming trips to Syria in the not-too-distant future and hope more tourists seize the opportunity and seek out an adventure in a wonderful nation.

“There is hope this is a sign of wider stability in the region, with a ceasefire between Israel and Palestine and a cooling of tensions in Iraq.”

Untamed Borders already organises holidays to countries including Afghanistan and Iraq, which the Foreign Office advises against visiting.

Next Tuesday a party is due to fly out for a camel trek in the desert of war-torn Yemen.

The company, set up in 2008, says it wants travellers to “experience the beauty and wonder of . . . lands that are often described as dangerous and inhospitable”.
