FAMILIES can shave hundreds of pounds off their summer holiday just by swapping destination, new research from Which? has revealed.
Breaks in the school holidays can cost a fortune, with flight and hotel prices soaring in peak months.
But holidaymakers looking to travel in August should set their sights on Turkey or Morocco, where they will get significantly more bang for their buck.
The consumer watchdog analysed the cost of 5,590 package holidays from some of the UK’s biggest tour operators, including Jet2holidays, Tui and easyJet Holidays.
It looked at a mix of self-catering, room-only, half-board and full-board getaways in several countries to assess the cheapest destinations to jet off to in peak season.
The countries were: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Malta, Montenegro, Morocco, Portugal, Spain (including the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands) and Turkey.

Of the destinations, the Dalaman region of Turkey was shown to be the most affordable, with a seven-night package costing an average of £859 per person in August.
The consumer champion pinpoints the sweltering temperatures of around 33C in August as a possible reason for the lower prices.
But with plenty of accommodation options featuring large pools, holidaymakers will be able to cool off in no time.
The data found that a week’s holiday (including flights) in Turkey’s Olu Deniz region, known for its dazzling Blue Lagoon, will cost an average £834pp.

A week-long package in the city of Agadir in Morocco, on the other hand, is an average of £889pp, putting the coastal hot spot in second place on the budget table.
The city, which sits close to the Anti-Atlas mountains, is ideal for sun-seekers as it is renowned for its golden sand beaches lined with cafes selling traditional grub.
In third place in the study is the Bourgas region of Bulgaria.
A package to this famously affordable destination will cost families an average of £904pp.
Other low-cost destinations for a summer holiday in 2025, according to the study, are the Venetian Riviera in Italy, Corfu in Greece and the Costa Brava in Spain.
The report showed that a seven-night getaway will cost less than £1,000pp on average in all three locations.
Perhaps the most surprising spot to make it into the budget chart is the central Italian region of Tuscany.
With its olive groves, chianti vineyards and miles of rolling hills, the glamorous region stole seventh place, with the average stay in August costing £1,034pp.
Purse strings
The report also looked at all-inclusive getaways.
These are a great way for families to stick to a budget, with all food and drink as well as accommodation and flights typically included in the cost on the break.
The data revealed the reason for Spain’s Costa Blanca being a favourite for Brits.
All-inclusive packages to this sun-drenched coast cost £1,113pp on average for August 2025.
The Canary Islands, known for their year-round glorious weather, are another spot to consider for those with tight purse strings.
The islands of Fuerteventura and Tenerife came in second and third place respectively in the low-cost all-inclusive chart for summer, while Gran Canaria took eighth place.
Seven-night getaways to these destinations will set travellers back an average of £1,146pp, £1,189pp and £1,268pp respectively in August.
Some other low-cost areas to consider, according to the data, are Dalaman in Turkey, the Bourgas in Bulgaria, Zante in Greece and Mallorca in Spain.
Nature lovers, however, should look to Madeira for an all-inclusive escape, owing to its scenic walks and many wildlife-spotting sites.
August holidays to the Portuguese island cost around £1,346pp all- inclusive, putting it in tenth place.
Naomi Leach, Deputy Editor of Which? Travel, said: “Holidaying when the kids are off school can be painfully expensive, but our latest price analysis shows there are a variety of destinations still available to book at a good price for an August getaway.
