Airport security worker reveals the biggest mistake passengers make which will always get you stopped

AN AIRPORT worker has revealed the biggest mistake passengers make when headed for security - and it's one way of making sure you will always get stopped.

By taking note, passengers could reduce their stress when passing through the building to their flight gate.

A security officer for one of London's major airports has offered up some advice for those hoping to avoid delays.

The anonymous employee told how the number one problem stems from passengers not listening to security staff.

Many are aware of the strict rules that are enforced in UK airports and how these differ to elsewhere around the world.

So it is important to not assume you know the correct procedure, as it may differ from when you have previously travelled through somewhere else.

The security officer said: "We're telling you these things for a reason - we don't get paid by the word.

"Your bags will be rejected and have to be manually searched if you don't remove certain items - these are CAA and DfT rules we have to follow, and we have no power to change or circumvent them."

They also explained how there is always a reason when someone has been asked to remove an item from their pockets or bags.

Those who are unsure should ask an officer with a "ten-second conversation" potentially saving "a ten-minute bag search further down the line".

Anyone hoping to plan ahead before heading to the airport could opt for comfortable clothing that does not have any large metallic elements such as buckles or zips.

These could see the need for a physical search if alarms ring.

It's also advised that if you are required to undertake further searches, to disclose everything.

Even a hairband in a pocket could see scanners be set off, with the machines using short radio waves to view clothing.

Areas which are more padded than others, such as extra pockets, patches or lots of layers could activate the alarm.

Finally, travellers should look to pack smart and consider how items may come across to airport employees.

For instance, a cologne bottle shaped like a hand grenade might be better off being distilled in a travel atomiser.

If your handbag closure clasp is heavy duty, maybe choose a different accessory.

Even water pistols, or anything gun shaped for that matter, are probably best being left at home.
