SEVERAL areas in Canterbury will benefit from a huge multi-million revamp - and it's great news for visitors.

The £22million project will see Canterbury Castle and public squares near Westgate Towers and St George’s Clocktower revamped.

Part of the Government's Levelling Up Fund, work is already underway to reopen Canterbury Castle.

The square in front of the Westgate Towers in Canterbury will also be reimagined as part of a wider regeneration project.

The area in front of the landmark will get new paving, creating a more pedestrianized square with less traffic - although vehicle access will remain in place.

While it won't be a shared space, according to Canterbury City Council, the new layout will make the area better for events like the Medieval Pageant and the Christmas lights parade.

A new coffee house and wine bar overlooking the square will also be built in the former Barretts Jaguar showroom.

The new restaurant will be called Fellons and will be the latest business venture of business partners Steve Allen and James Caldon.

Allen and Caldon already run a restaurant and an escape room in Canterbury.

Mr Allen told : "There is a big year ahead and exciting times for the Westgate, which is on the brink of a new era as a gateway to the city.

"The iconic medieval towers always deserved to be better showcased and we were privileged to become the custodians of the building.

"Now, the new square and Westgate One student redevelopment, together with our new cafe/wine bar and the new experiences we are planning for the Westgate Towers, will transform the area."

Exploring the UK's Most Underrated Cities

Construction work will start on the new square next year.

Dane John Gardens will also be renovated as part of the project, while parks like St Mary Magdalene Gardens and St Mary de Castro Gardens will be transformed into "story gardens" featuring exhibits about Canterbury's history.

And Canterbury isn't the only city in the UK set to benefit from a huge multi-million-pound renovation project.

A former industrial site in Stoke-on-Trent is set to get a £60million revamp.

Located between Stoke-on-Trent Train Station and the Trent & Mersey Canal, the Goods Yard is a new urban neighbourhood in the city.

The first phase of the £60million development will be completed next spring, with work already underway on a hotly-anticipated public square.

According to the , Capital&Centric, the new square will feature a lawn area that's the same size as a tennis court, a walkway, hangout spaces, seating areas and over 70 trees and plants.

There will also be a space for pop-up markets and live music events, which both locals and holidaymakers will be able to visit.

What is Canterbury like?

There's more than enough history in Chaucer’s home city to keep you busy for an entire week.

There is a warren of medieval Tudor buildings, a Norman castle, Roman ruins and, of course, its immense cathedral.

Look out for ancient treasures from further afield too. The Beaney House of Art And Knowledge () is home to oddities ranging from an Egyptian mummified cat to African daggers taken from captured slave-trading ships.

The King’s Mile is a great strolling route that takes you past boutiques and curio shops galore. Try the deliciously carnivorous Pork And Co () for a bite.

The delights on offer here include slow-cooked, free-range smoked pork rolls with plenty of sauce and slaw.

The Canterbury Cathedral Lodge is in the grounds of the cathedral and has rooms from £107 B&B. For more information see .

Meanwhile, this is the smallest town in the UK - and it has a Michelin starred restaurant.

And this UK village has been compared to a 1940s film set.
