The fabulously kitsch Madonna Inn has different themes in each room
The motel in San Luis Obispo, California, also has a giant 16ft gold tree in the main dining room and a rock waterfall urinal
IT’S hard to stand out in the hotel industry, but one motel in California has well and truly nailed it.
The Madonna Inn, in San Luis Obispo, has become a mecca for lovers of kitsch from across the globe.
Dubai’s Burj Al Arab might officially be the world’s most popular hotel on social media, but the Madonna Inn holds the unofficial title of world’s most Instagrammble hotel for its range of quirky rooms.
The hotel was built in 1958, when it launched with just 12 rooms, and it has since grown to 110 individually-styled rooms.
The quirky décor uses rocks from across the inn’s 1,000-acre estate and they feature in everything from rock rooms and waterfall showers to rock fireplaces and even a rock waterfall urinal located in the men’s restroom.
There are a range of themed bedrooms, including a Caveman Room, a Jungle Rock room, an American Home room, a Love Nest room and an Austrian Suite.
They are an acquired taste though – while the ostentatious décor is a huge hit with many, fans of minimalist design will probably get a headache from the patterned carpets, walls and upholstery.
Ornate detailing, like pieces of stained glass throughout the inn that feature construction and cattle farming scenes, have made it a huge hit with tourists.
There is also a hand-carved marble balustrade in the Gold Rush dining room that came from the Hearst Castle, and a giant 16ft gold tree in the main dining room.
Unsurprisingly, the décor means that it is regularly tagged on sites like Instagram, but it is also popular with television programmes as a filming location.
It has featured in an episode of the Simpsons and The Bachelor, and the music video for Foxes’ song “Echo” was also filmed there.
Davy Jones from The Monkees, Bette Midler, Eric Idle, Debbie Harry, Macaulay Culkin and John Wayne are just a handful of the celebrities who have stayed there.
Room prices start at £168.
