Packing efficiently with limited space is much easier in the summer when clothes aren't as thick and bulky.

But one former flight attendant has revealed how to make the most of limited hand luggage space when jetting off on a winter city break.

Don't pack winter boots

She told the team at Joules: "Winter boots are a must in chilly destinations, but they can take up a lot of luggage space.

"Passengers often forget that they can wear their heavier boots on the plane, saving room in their suitcase and preventing them from being forced to check their luggage."

Don't pack coats into cases

Another bulky item holidaymakers should wear rather than pack is their coat.

She added: "Your coat is one of the bulkiest items you’ll pack for a winter break, yet many travellers opt to stash it in their suitcase rather than wear it to the airport.

"Wearing your coat can free up precious carry-on space and keep you cosy.

"If you get really cold on flights and are travelling to a cooler destination I’d recommend wearing a gilet underneath your coats, which is fashionable and practical!"

Don't overpack on layers

In addition to wearing bulkier items, Saskia Sekhri also believes holidaymakers often overpack layers when flying to a cold destination.

The Sun's Travel Editor Lisa Minot shares her top tips when flying hand luggage only

The former flight attendant explained: "People tend to throw multiple thick jumpers into their bags when packing for wintery trips, however smart layering is key.

"Packing fewer, thinner but warmer layers, such as thermal tops or heat-retaining materials, can help save space without compromising on warmth."

When it comes to travelling with just hand luggage, the former flight attendant shared four other packing tips.

Saskia recommended using compression packing cubes to save on space by compressing bulky items like jumpers and scarves.

Aim to pack neutral colours or monochrome outfits to create a capsule wardrobe, which means you can pack less.

The ex-cabin crew member also suggested checking to see if an accommodation provider has an iron, so you don't have to worry about clothing items getting creased.

Meanwhile, this travel pro showed how to fit a week's worth of clothing into hand luggage.
