Introducing Portugal

Sandy beaches, summer sunshine, first class golf and mouth-watering cuisine are all essentials for many Brits’ perfect holiday. Luckily, Portugal holidays offer the lot. Whether you’re tempted by the stunning beaches of the Algarve, the history and culture of Lisbon’s charming cityscape, or you’re simply looking to relax with the family in the green landscapes of Porto and the Douro River, unwind and enjoy the ride in this friendly and picturesque holiday hotspot. No matter what you’re looking for in a break, Portugal can cater for you, whether you’re interested in unwinding in quiet villages or experiencing unforgettable nightlife.

Getting around in Portugal

Lisbon and Porto are home to impressive underground systems that are consistently being developed. Both cities and linked by high-quality (and on-time!) bus services, though you will probably be fine getting around on foot everywhere else. The two cities are also home to speedy tram services. Take the tram around Lisbon and Porto and you’ll be able to enjoy exceptional views of some of the cities’ most iconic sights.

You shouldn’t have to spend too long waiting around for taxis when you’re in Portugal’s bigger towns and cities. You can expect to pay around 20% more at night and during weekends and holidays. A surcharge may be payable if the taxi needs to venture outside of the city limits. Larger cities are home to meter-less taxis, which are ideal for excursions. Hitching is not advisable or practical. Portugal has an excellent railway network, so you shouldn’t face any real trouble travelling between cities and towns or heading out to the Douro Valley. Various car hire facilities are also available – it may be worth arranging something before you land in Portugal for valuable peace of mind.
