THERE'S a tiny island in Europe that's home to crystal-clear waters and secluded beaches - and it's mainly visited by locals.

Located in northern Croatia in Kvarner Bay, Susak is nestled between islands like Losinj and Cres.

It takes just under two hours to reach Susak from Cres, or 35 minutes from Losinj on a catamaran.

The tiny island stretches for just 3.8 square kilometres, meaning it's gone largely unnoticed by most tourists.

Susak is home to just 200 local residents, with that number rarely rising in the summer months because the island only has one hotel.

throughout the year, with both locals and visitors asked to only walk or circle on Susak.

describes Susak as "the smaller and more remote of the Croatian islands, Susak is a bit of a step back in time in terms of island life and tourism (or lack of)."

There's only one town on the island, which has aptly been named Susak Town.

The town is divided into two parts, the upper part (Gornje Selo) and the lower part (Donje Selo).

There are a number of sights on the island, including St Nicholas Church, a small church that was built in the 18th century.

Located on the highest point of the island, there's also a lighthouse, with an abandoned military post nearby.

Unlike other islands in Croatia, Susak is made of sand, which means its home to plenty of sandy beaches.

Spiaza is the the most well-known beach on the island thanks to its soft sand and shallow waters, making it ideal for families.

Visitors can also rent sun loungers and beach umbrellas at Spiaza Beach, which makes it a litter busier than other spots.

Bok is another beach on the island, although it's slightly smaller than Spiaza.

There is only one hotel on the island called Sansegus.

The three-star hotel is located right on the seafront and even has its own restaurant.

Despite just having one hotel, there are other accommodation options for holidaymakers, including private rooms and apartments.

Pula Airport is the closest international airport to the island.

Direct flights between the UK and Pula operate from London and Bristol.

Flight prices start from £31 for a return ticket from London Luton Airport to Pula in October.

Croatia certainly isn't short of little-known islands that Brit holidaymakers can visit.

Other Croatian Islands to Visit

Another place Brits can visit is Drvenik Veli, also known as Drvenik Veliki, the island is just off the coast of Split in Croatia.

Located in the central Dalmatian archipelago, Drvenik Veli is only 2km away from the Croatian mainland.

One of the island's main draws is Krknjasi Bay, also known as the Blue Lagoon Croatia, which is located on the far side of the island.

It takes just 50 minutes by boat to reach Drvenik from Trogir, with daily ferry services costing €2 (£1.71).

Because the island doesn't have any paved roads, cars are forbidden.
