The perfect holiday involves travelling four hours to get there on a plane, lasts 11 days and has a daily step count of more than 10,000.

A study of 2,000 holidaymakers revealed 37 per cent prefer a beach holiday - with an ideal temperature of 23 degrees - while 29 per cent rather a city break packed full with sight-seeing.

Nearly four in 10 (37 per cent) enjoy the thrill of seeing where each day takes them rather than setting an itinerary, and 70 per cent think it’s important to experience something new or unique.

Other things people look for in a holiday are good food, guaranteed sunshine, and a swimming pool bar.

A spokesperson for Jet2holidays, which commissioned the research, said: “We know that everyone has different desires and expectations when it comes the perfect holiday, including being treated like a VIP and having the best time.

"So planning it involves various elements to ensure it meets your requirements.

“The perfect holiday is personal to everyone, but the main themes seem to be sunshine, relaxation, cultural experiences, and time to unwind.

“Careful planning and a flexible itinerary will ensure holidaymakers make the most of their time away and create lasting memories.”

The study also found eight in 10 believe it's important to make sure their upcoming holiday is ‘perfect’, with 59 per cent claiming this has already been fulfilled on a previous trip.

Having the ‘perfect holiday’ is even seen as important as securing the ‘perfect job’, with 76 per cent voting both equally important.

To ensure their holiday is the best it can be, 39 per cent will spend hours researching everything.

While the same percentage (39 per cent) prefer a package holiday - as they can book everything in one place with no fuss.

Italy, Greece and Spain were the top destinations those polled, via OnePoll.com, would most like to visit.

Discovering local culture and traditions, spending time with family, and reading a good book by the pool or beach are among the top experiences that make up the ideal break away.

It also emerged that being able to see the sea, getting a nice tan, and not always knowing what the time is are all things that give them that holiday feeling.
