THERE's nothing worse than booking a holiday, only for it to rain the entire time and ruin your getaway.

It turns out that the best place to go in Europe for a good weather getaway is Valletta, the capital of Malta.

The small city is a UNESCO heritage site and it welcomes the warmest average temperatures in the continent, while also having cheap beer and some famous filming locations.

described the city as "a pretty safe bet almost any time" for any holidaymakers looking for sun.

They said: "The hottest place in Europe is Valletta in Malta, with an average daily temperature over the whole year of 22.3C."

However, cooling off with a cold drink is very affordable in the city, with the average price of a beer between €2-3 (£1.70-£2.50) in either shops or bars.

There's plenty to see and do in Valletta too while enjoying the sunshine.

Ancient sites like the Hagar Qim megalithic temple complex, which is one of the earliest freestanding stone buildings on Earth.

The complex dates back to the 4th millennium BC, and is said to be one of the world's best-preserved landmarks from that era.

The city's landmarks also include the Mosta Dome, a church that dates back to the 1800s, and the Barrakka Gardens, landscaped gardens that offer amazing views across the Grand Harbour.

Other sights like Fort Ricasoli will be familiar to fans of Game of Thrones with the fortress used as Gate of the Gods in Kings Landing.

It's one of many filming locations from the series found throughout the country.

Valletta's position right on the coast provides other exciting opportunities for holidaymakers, with some of Malta's stunning beaches, some of which have clear blue waters and soft white sand.

Meanwhile, its cave complexes are world famous, with the Blue Grotto one of Malta's highest-rated attractions.

The natural wonder was named by British soldiers stationed in Malta in the 1950s, who compared it to the cave with the same name off the Italian island of Capri.

Valletta is one of the smallest capital cities in Europe, meaning it can be explored pretty easily.

And its size isn't an indication of how much there is to do there.

Viator continued: "Malta’s UNESCO-listed capital may be small, but it’s packed with things to do.

"There's restored baroque palaces, world-class museums, cutting-edge contemporary architecture and art galleries, and panoramic views of the dazzling Grand Harbour to check out."
