And some of the best train routes to travel on throughout the UK

THE UK is home to some of the most unique - and most attractive - train journeys.

The North Norfolk Poppy Line runs from Sheringham to Holt and is operated almost exclusively by volunteers.

The steam train service has been running since 1887, apart from a short time between 1964 and 1975 when it was closed.

Now it is much loved by locals and rail enthusiasts looking for a real nostalgic train experience.

It was recently listed in the 11 most scenic train journeys in the UK put together by , who praised both the train and the scenery it passed through.

They wrote: "We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again, but North Norfolk might just be the most underrated part of England. The entire coast is an absolute delight.

"The so-called ‘Poppy Line’ is an adorable way to explore it. The heritage steam train runs the short distance between Sheringham and Holt and is an exercise in beautiful nostalgia."

Because it's run mainly by volunteers, the line doesn't run every day, but only on select days during the year.

They mainly include weekends and school holidays, however it operates most days during the summer months.

In addition to its normal service, there are special events that can be reached along the tracks.

Those include Classic Sitcom Weekend, with the brigade from the Dad’s Army Museum celebrating the popular series, with an episode filmed at Weybourne Station.

The station was also used as a filming spot for both Hi-de-Hi and ‘Allo ‘Allo so both shows will also be commemorated on the day.

Meanwhile, the Vintage Transport Festival, Rails & Ales and Hallowsteam! are all due to take place along the Poppy Line this year, among a number of other events.

Eight world-class UK beaches

Day Rover tickets on board the train start from £18 for adults, however there are more exclusive packages available.

For instance, steam driver and diesel driver experiences allow people to have a go at driving one of the trains.

Near to the line are seaside holiday hotspots like Cromer, which has one of the country's warmest beaches.

It is also home to a Grade II listed pier, built 115 years ago and one of only five in the country to have a working theatre.

Cornwall

The route from St Erth to St Ives only stops at Carbis Bay en route to its final destination, but the views out the window for the whole journey are pretty spectacular.
