Northern English city crowned top place for Americans to visit in 2024

A UK city has been name one of the world's best places to watch in 2024.

The New York Times has revealed it's full list of 52 Places to Go in 2024.

With destinations including Egypt's Hurghada, Flamingo in Florida and the Albanian Alps.

But the unlikely UK destination to make the list as well was Manchester.

Being the UK's unofficial second city, the destination made the list due to it's huge new music arena opening this year.

Co-Op Live, opening in April, will welcome headliners including Liam Gallagher, Eric Clapton and Barry Manilow on it's opening night, performing to 23,500 people.

The New York Times said: "Music has long been at the core of Manchester’s gritty soul, from Joy Division and the Stone Roses to Oasis and, now, Harry Styles, who is backing Britain’s largest new music arena, Co-op Live, set to open in April.

"Stars like Liam Gallagher, Eric Clapton and Barry Manilow are booked to inaugurate the 23,500-capacity space.

"[It] will complement the reopening of concert halls like the post-punk incubator Band on the Wall and New Century, where the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and Tina Turner have all graced the stage."

It also credited two huge music conferences taking place in Manchester this year, including the five-day Worldwide Music Expo in October and the four-day Beyond the Music festival, also in October.

It comes just weeks after Time Out also named Manchester one of the best places to visit in the UK in 2024.

But there is much more to Manchester than it's musical heritage.

Last year, the Castlefield Viaduct opened in the city, a transformation of the 1862 viaduct and compared to the New York High Line.

The Manchester Museum also reopened last year too.

Most tourists head to the Northern Quarter, home to individual shops and vintage stores, or it's two famous football stadiums - the Old Trafford grounds and the Etihad Stadium,

Foodies can try one of the 17 restaurants that feature in the Michelin Guide, including The Sparrow's famous spatzle egg noodles.

And Manchester's nightlife is some of the best in the country.

The bar Speak in Code was recently named one of the best in the UK, with friendly bartenders able to put a twist on any cocktail you like the look of.

Otherwise there is also indoor skating rink Paradise Skate World, with 80s music and bar in the middle, or the three-storey K2 karaoke bar.
