Head to Yorkshire for a Hols from £9.50 break with proper pub grub and tropical rainforest experience

Learn to train and fly one of the parrots at the tropical rainforest experience

ROLLING moorland with sprouting purple heather and old-fashioned cities lined with cobblestone streets are just what makes Yorkshire so special.

You really do get the best of both worlds with built-up urban centres and beautiful rural landscapes.

The walled city of York is an absolute gem, overlooked by its towering 13th-century Gothic Minster and bursting with boutique shops.

Head for Bettys Tea Room while you are here (). There are five in Yorkshire. Even if you are only having a cup of tea, it is quite an experience.

The traditional tea rooms are all elegantly decorated, and homemade cakes are served on china, while tea comes in polished silver pots.

Stay in Park Holidays Sand le Mere in Hull, which has its own soft-play area, climbing wall and family friendly bar, all close to some sandy beaches.

If you have kids who are really into wildlife, then Bugtopia Hornsea Zoo is the place to go. Tickets are £6 for adults and a fiver for children (see ). The zoo describes itself as a tropical rainforest experience on the Yorkshire coast and it is not hard to see why, with parrots, snakes and reptiles all living here.

Children can perhaps overcome their fears by touching tarantulas, or learn to train and fly one of the parrots.

If you prefer to see creatures in the wild, then Spurn Nature Reserve is for you ().

Famous for the broad range of birds that migrate here year on year, the reserve is made up of a long stretch of sand jutting out from Holderness Cove.
