Set up base at Park Holidays’ Glendale in Wigton, close to the wide-mouthed River Eden, which overlooks Solway Firth in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Or what about Parkdean Resorts Ocean Edge in Morecambe? It sits at the edge of the ocean and has an indoor pool and soft play for the little ones.

FUN FOR UNDER A FIVER

FOR those staying in Morecambe, Happy Mount Park has pirate-themed adventure golf that will keep youngsters content.

For £4.50 per child, they will have to manoeuvre their way around a pirate ship and rope bridge, while adults tuck into a pastry in the cafe.

There is also an indoor play area from £3 per child (see ).

CHEAP EATS AND DRINKS

LOOK out for Diplos Pizza (diplos.pizza) in Morecambe, which has sourdough pizzas from £8.50.

Pick from margheritas and pepperonis or the more unusual seaside-inspired The Bay, with mozzarella, Morcambe Bay potted shrimp, anchovies, tuna and capers.

Anyone staying in Glendale should head to The Solway Lounge, which does brekkie baps for less than £3, kids’ meals of burgers and fish fingers for £5.95 and mains such as homemade steak pie with mash and veg for £12.95 (see ).

BARGAIN BEACH DAYS

Morecambe Bay has the largest expanse of mudflats and sand in the UK, home to a huge number of mussels and cockles.

It is the potted shrimp you will want to eat here, though. Swing by the tiny Edmondsons Fresh Fish shop where you will be able to buy some to cook with, or head to Atkinsons Fish and Chips () which does a hefty portion of haddock and chips for £10.30 and burgers from £3.70. Or have a fun picture taken with the statue of the town’s most famous son, Eric Morecambe, below.

AFFORDABLE ATTRACTIONS

JUST under five miles from Regent Bay holiday park is mighty Lancaster Castle. Stroll the medieval dungeon cells and tour the Wells Tower, where witches were kept. And see the Shire Hall, still sometimes used as a courtroom. Entry is £22.50 for a family of four (see ).
