The German airline launched the routes from the regional airport back in 2021, eventually becoming a daily service.

However, these will be stopped from February 3, 2024.

A spokesperson for Bristol Airport told : “We are deeply disappointed to hear of Lufthansa’s decision to temporarily suspend the service between Bristol and Frankfurt, since the route was performing well.

"We will continue to work with Lufthansa to return the service and restart this important city link once the aircraft issues have been resolved.”

One person said it had "ruined his Christmas" after he planned to travel on the route next year, then onwards to Australia to see family,

Earlier this week, it was confirmed that the German airline would also scrap routes between Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Frankfurt.

The routes first started operated back in May 2022, with up to six routes a week, flying every day excluding Saturday.

But this is also to be scrapped, just one day before the Bristol route scrap.

The airline said the cancelled routes was due to ";unscheduled maintenance on the fleet".

A Lufthansa said previously said: “Due to unscheduled maintenance work on Pratt & Whitney engines in the Lufthansa Airbus A320neo fleet, Lufthansa Airlines will have significantly fewer aircraft available next year than originally planned.

"The company has therefore decided to suspend some routes from February 2024 that have not shown a positive economic development in recent months.

“The routes to the UK affected are Munich to Orly, Frankfurt to Bristol and Frankfurt to Liverpool.

"Lufthansa regrets this decision.”

A Liverpool  spokesperson said: “We are naturally very disappointed to hear of Lufthansa’s decision to suspend their Frankfurt service from Liverpool.

"We will continue to work with Lufthansa to secure the return of this important link at the earliest opportunity, once their availability of aircraft issues have been resolved."

Ryanair has also confirmed plans to scrap a number of routes from the UK to Portugal.

And more than 16,000 flights are to be scrapped in the first two months of 2024 due to ATC works across France.
