FUERTEVENTURA often gets overlooked when Brits are thinking about Canaries holidays, but the island has a unique charm that makes it stand out - on top of the much cheaper prices.

Compared to Tenerife, Fuerteventura is usually easier on the wallet, as accommodation, flights, activities and restaurants are more affordable even during the peak season.

Why Fuerteventura?

The island boasts an impressive 3,000 hours of sunshine yearly, making it a great destination all year round.

Fuerteventura offers Mediterranean weather, warmer than Tenerife. This is because the adjacent island of Lanzarote blocks out most of the breeze, making the island drier.

The holidays in Fuerteventura usually cost about 40 per cent less than in Tenerife, even in July and August.

Fuerteventura usually has a varied crowd, and the island is known for its more relaxed, calmer ambience compared to its sister islands.

What is it like in Fuerteventura?

One of the main draws of Fuerteventura is its distinctive scenery, watersports and incredible beaches.

The island is a haven due to its lengthy, immaculate beaches and golden sand dunes. Playa de Cofete, Sotavento Beach and El Cotillo Beach & Lagoons are the best beaches.

For those who enjoy water activities, Fuerteventura is a paradise. It's a great place to windsurf and kiteboard, thanks to the steady winds - and competitions even get held on the islands.

Between April and October, the only waterpark on the island, Acua Water Park, is also open with waterslides, lazy rivers, kamikazes and wave pools.

The island also offers protected natural areas, such as Corralejo Natural Park. Those wanting to take advantage of the unspoiled Corralejo beaches can do so by just going in. At the same time, more adventurous holidaymakers can hike up the Montaña Roja to see views of Lanzarote and La Graciosa across the lake.

Elsewhere, the Ajuy Caves are home to the oldest rocks in the Canary Islands and can be explored with tour guides.

When is the best time to visit Fuerteventura?

The best season to visit Fuerteventura is in the late spring or early summer, when it is the sunniest time of year, with peak temperatures in the mid-20s and low humidity.

During this time of the year, you'll find an average of nine hours of sunlight daily and fewer crowds than in the peak summer season.
