The tiny holiday island that doubles for Greece in movies – but it’s cheaper and closer to UK
A TINY holiday island in Europe is often used to portray Greece in movies - but is cheaper and easier to get to from the UK.
The Greek islands are among the most popular holiday destinations in the world, meaning they're also very expensive and extremely busy.
However, holidaymakers can get a similar experience elsewhere, while spending less and having to put up with fewer crowds.
Vis in Croatia is a very small island and has only recently become something of a tourist destination.
Although it's an ex-military base, it still has plenty to offer, particularly for people looking for a holiday similar to one they might have on a Greek island.
In fact, it was used as a filming destination for Mamma Mia 2, doubling up as the Greek island of Skopelos where the first of the musical movies was recorded.

The island, which had a population of 3,617 during the 2011 census, takes two and a half hours to reach by ferry from Split.
It was cut off from foreign visitors from the 1950s up until 1989, and it also served as a military base for the Yugoslav National Army, forcing many of the locals to leave the area.
Since then it has grown as a holiday destination, particularly among wine enthusiasts, as it produces some of Croatia’s most popular white wines.
Miles and miles of vineyards can be seen all across the island, which is surrounded by amazing beaches.

Among the best is Stoncica Beach, which has been described as an "ideal place" for families to visit.
said: "On this sandy beach there is an excellent restaurant and beach bar, a playground for beach volleyball and lots of shade under the palm trees.
"Stoncica is an ideal place for family outings."
Elsewhere, Zaglav Beach is also a visitors' favourite, although it remains quieter than some of the other more popular spots on the island.
Croatia Expert described it as "one of the most beautiful beaches on the Adriatic coast".
They continued: "This beautiful beach of your dreams is a perfect place for those who want to escape the summer crowds and enjoy the peace, quiet and crystal clear waters."
Despite it being perfectly well suited to a summer holiday, heading to Vis instead of a Greek island could be a much more financially viable option.
Return flights to Split from the UK are available from around £90pp, while accommodation on the island can be picked up for as little as £34 a night, for two.
Food and drink aren't exactly pricey either, with the average price of a beer in Croatia around £2.10, while a three-course meal for two will usually set you back around £34.
As well as being less pricey, it's also closer to the UK, with flights taking around two and a half hours to reach the nearest airport, Split.
Flights to Greek islands like Santorini take almost twice as long, while costing around £20 more per person.
