Why Mombasa?

Mombasa is a popular beach city in Kenya, with some of the country's best beaches.

Due to its location in the Indian Ocean, it has a mix of Indian, Arabian and African influences.

And it's the best place to go for some winter sun - the temperatures in December and January hit 33C.

Priti Bhudia, Africa expert at Southall Travel, told Sun Online Travel: "With 500km of soft, white sandy beaches and a fascinating cultural history, Mombasa is a lesser-known option for an Indian Ocean holiday.

"The shorter flying time, an average of 11 hours via Nairobi and only a two-hour time difference, makes for an easy beach getaway that is also excellent value for money.

"There are a number of secluded islands, easily accessible from the town and the resort offers the best diving opportunities in Kenya."

What are the best Mombasa holiday deals?

Mombasa is a great alternative to other beach destinations, with all-inclusive breaks starting from £849pp with Southall Travel.

A similar all-inclusive Maldives holiday start from £1,395pp, meaning you could save hundreds.

including seven nights at the 4* Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort and Spa for just £1,435pp in September.

Not only does this include return flights, but it is on a half-board basis.

This is compared to a similar 4* deal in the Seychelles, which costs around £2,145pp.

What is Mombasa like?

Mombasa is a coastal city with lots of beachfront resorts right on the white sand.

Most people travel there and stay at the luxury resorts, with watersports such as jet skiing and snorkelling popular with tourists.

Popular beaches include Nyali Beach and Bamburi Beach, both lined with palm trees.

There is lots to do outside of the hotels too.

Priti explained: "The Old Town of Mombasa was greatly influenced by the Arabs over the centuries gives the beach location a more authentic feel compared to alternative destinations in the Indian Ocean.

"And each January, Lamu island, off the Mombasa coast, hosts an annual dhow festival, a fantastic spectacle for tourists and locals alike, to experience the Swahili culture."

You can also do day trip safaris, although TripAdvisor also has two and three-day safari hikes.

And make sure to try the local dish Nyama Choma - barbecued meat served with a side of salad and sauces.

What else do I need to know about Mombasa?

There is just a two hour time difference, so it won't take long to adjust.

Your passport will need to be valid for at least six months from the date you arrive, as well as have two blank pages left.

Brits also have to apply for a Kenyan visa online which cost $55 (£42).
