Our seaside pub is one of the best in Britain… but it’s just 40 minutes from a major UK city

The building of the now-seaside boozer dates back to 1833 - and was initially three separate fisherman's cottages before various brewers swooped in.

The self-styled 'typical English pub' pub was named Merseyside Pub and Bar of the Year in the National Pub and Bar Awards - securing its place in the running for the top national award.

The prestigious ceremony will take place in London on June 28 - where The Windmill will contest 93 other venues hoping to bag the top prize.

Neil Walsh and partner Tom - who run the pub's day-to-day operations - and say they are ecstatic with the award and nomination.

On a Facebook post, they wrote: "Well isn’t this a surprise! We have been named Merseyside Pub and Bar of The Year in the National Pub and Bar Awards.

"We're now off to London in June to receive our award and compete against all the other county winners for the main title.

"The National Pub and Bar Awards are the most prestigious awards for the pub and bar industry so it’s a great honour to receive this award.

"As [always] thank you to our customers and hard-working staff that make it all possible."
