The once-popular beach resort less than 3 hours from the UK – with 33C summers and cheap holidays

Why Hammamet?

Hammamet, a holiday resort in Tunisia, was once one of the most popular destinations for Brits wanting affordable breaks and is dubbed the "St Tropez of Tunisia".

However, tourists numbers plummeted after a terrorist attack in Tunisia in 2015, where thirty Brits were killed at a hotel at Port El Kanaoui following a shooting on the beach.

The UK government initially advised against all travel to Tunisia, leading to all flights being cancelled but they resumed back in 2018 after the ban was lifted with Thomas Cook and TUI relaunching holiday packages.

An ABTA spokesperson told Sun Online Travel why the destination should be back on your holiday list in 2023.

They said: "Tunisia has long been a popular destination for UK holidaymakers, offering beautiful sandy beaches, desert safaris and the chance to visit Roman ruins – all within easy distance of the UK.

"Tunisia also offers great value for money – a top priority for many holidaymakers this year – so beachfront areas like Hammamet or Port El Kantaoui, where all-inclusive resorts are plentiful, are likely to be popular for those who want to keep their holiday costs in check.

"It’s also a great destination for anyone looking to travel outside of the peak summer months, as it offers warm, sunny weather from March to November.”

Hammamet has some of the cheapest holiday deals with all-inclusive breaks for less than £240pp, and direct flights are less than three hours.

What are the best Hammamet holiday deals?

Hammamet holidays are some of the cheapest on the market, with easyJet Holidays, TUI and Thomas Cook all offering bargain deals.

Seven nights breaks including flights can be found for as little as £217 with Love Holidays.

If you fancy all-inclusive, they aren't much more expensive - we've found some for less than £300.

The cheapest deal we've found is week-long stays at Houda Yasmine Marina & SPA in March, costing from £287pp all-inclusive.

Temperatures start to rise to 20C from next month with highs of 33C in the summer.

What is Hammamet like?

Hammamet is a popular Tunisian beach resort thanks to its nightlife, so it's perfect if you're after a partying holiday with your mates.

While most holidaymakers will spend their time relaxing by the pool and on the beach, there is still lots to do.

Tourists can visit the 15th century Medina of Hammamet to buy local goods and souvenirs.

Carthageland was the first theme park in North Africa and has five themed worlds, including a waterpark and the 60mph rollercoaster King Kong.

If you want to explore other parts of Tunisia, there is also the capital city of Tunis or Monastir, another beach resort with cheap deals.

What else do I need to know about Hammamet?

The currency is Tunisian dinar (TND), with £10 around 36 TND although some holiday resorts accept euros and dollars.

It is illegal to take dinar out of the country so make sure you exchange it all back before you leave.

The country is just one hour ahead of the UK.

While the official language of Tunisia is Arabic, most of the staff at holiday resorts will speak English.

There are no Covid restrictions in place and you can stay for up to 90 days without needing a visa.

Your passport only needs to be valid for the duration of your stay.

The UK government no longer warns against travel to the holiday resorts but it is still advised against travelling to locations near the Libyan and Algerian border.
