While it is unclear as to why the advice has been issued, a read: "Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Turkey."

"Most terrorist attacks have taken place in the south-east of the country and in Ankara and Istanbul.

"There is a potential that citizens from western countries may be targets or caught up in attacks, particularly in the major cities.

"Attacks could be indiscriminate, and occur without warning, including in places visited by foreigners, affecting public buildings, places of worship, major events or large public gatherings.

"You should be especially vigilant and where possible avoid places frequented by Westerners, including diplomatic premises, places of worship, and around significant religious occasions and public holidays; terrorist groups sometimes call for attacks around these times.

"Be vigilant, monitor media reports and keep up to date with this travel advice."

The US Embassy and Consulate have also released updated guidance regarding travel to Turkey.

A read: "The US government cautions its citizens of possible imminent retaliatory attacks by terrorists against churches, synagogues, and diplomatic missions in Istanbul or other places Westerners frequent, especially in the Beyoglu, Galata, Taksim, and Istiklal areas.

"This message updates the January 27, 2023 security alert regarding Quran-burning incidents in Europe."

The US embassy noted that Turkish authorities were investigating the matter.

Meanwhile the UK Foreign Office also encouraged holidaymakers to co-operate with airport officials because of a "heightened risk of terrorist attack against the aviation industry."

They also advise against all travel to areas within 10km of the border with Syria and all but essential travel to Sirnak and the province of Hakkar.

For any Brits heading to the country, tourists need to have at least 150 days left on their passport from the date of arrival.

Holidaymakers will also need to have a full blank page for entry and exit stamps into the country.

Meanwhile Jet2 have added additional flights to Antayla and Dalaman in Turkey for summer 2023.
