Spain holiday warning as top resorts discuss new Covid rules after rise in cases

SPANISH holiday hotspots could see Covid restrictions return, after a rise in cases in the country.

Andalusia, a popular region with British holidaymakers, has become the first major location in Spain to hint about the return of regulations.

President of the regional government, Juanna Morenno, has asked for "maximum precautions" and wouldn't rule out the "adoption of preventative measures."

He said: "Prevention is better than cure and it is better to be two little steps in front rather than two little steps behind.

"I prefer to err on the side of foresight and that we go ahead with decisions in case we had some sort of incident that we hope and trust won't occur."

The region's public health committee will meet on 17 January to discuss the present Covid situation after a rise in cases and concern over new variants.

Meanwhile the Balearic Government has advised tourists and locals to wear masks indoors in Majorca.

Across Spain masks must be worn on public transport, inside planes and in health centres and pharmacies.

Patricia Gómez, Minister of Health of the Balearic Government, said: "We all know that it is in closed spaces when the virus circulates actively."

"The mask is a preventive measure although at the moment there are no indications to return to a generalised mandatory use in interiors."

Gómez said the use of the mask indoors was recommended but in any case not mandatory or at least for now. 

The news comes after Spain brought back some of their Covid restrictions due to soaring Covid cases abroad.

Passengers arriving at Spanish airports from China will now be screened for Covid, with arrivals needing a negative Covid test or proof of vaccination.

The measure will remain in place until at least February 15, Spain's health ministry said in a statement, with travellers arriving from China required to undergo a temperature check and a Covid-19 test.
