However, it was instead processed as NZ$4,500 (£2,200) by mistake, leaving Jannine shocked when she was informed of the error by an airline staff member.

After failed attempts from several members of airline staff to return the money, Jannine was eventually told that she would get the money back "within 10-15 days" although was given no receipts or proof of the error which she could use to chase up the refund with.

She had a feeling that things might not go smoothly, which turned out to be correct.

She told : “By this time my father and I needed to go to the boarding gate and all we could do was simply have faith that they had successfully processed the refund; however, my gut instinct told me otherwise.”

Jannine spent the next month chasing up the refund and was even at one stage told that the case was closed and the money was no longer owed.

However, she persisted and after several calls, was finally issued the reimbursement.

She said: “It was an extremely frustrating experience. A $4,455 discrepancy is no small error.

"Had I not continued to keep calling and persevering, my refund was not coming to me.”

A Jetstar spokesperson apologised to Jannine for not processing the refund quicker.

They said: "Our finance team processed the reimbursement yesterday and as a gesture of goodwill, we have offered her a travel voucher."

Jannine however was not too enthusiastic about the voucher and said she is hoping to avoid travelling with the airline in the future.

A spokesperson told Sun Online Travel: “We sincerely apologise to Jannine for the delay in refunding her money."
