Kat Kamalani, who shares tips from her travel experience on TikTok , has advice on everything from hotel breakfasts to hygiene.

Her first tip is to never use the glasses provided, because you don't know how well they've been cleaned.

She said: "Starting out, if you don't have a dishwasher in your hotel room I would never use the glass cups.

"The reason being, you don't know if they were cleaned properly or just rinsed out from the last people who stayed in that hotel room."

A fellow TikTok user who claimed to be a former hotel cleaner confirmed that glasses don't get cleaned properly, commenting: "As a former cleaning staff at a hotel I would tell you that they ask us to wash the glasses with the same sponge we use to wash the toilet, so yeah..."

Another added: "I have over 25 years of working in the hospitality industry and I agree with you. Most housekeepers do not sanitise or clean the glasses among others."

Similarly dubious, according to Kat, are TV remotes because it's an item that housekeeping is unlikely to clean.

She always brings a clear plastic bag to cover the remote before using the television.

Finally, Kat has some tips for hotel guests who don't have breakfast included in their stay, suggesting they use hot water from the coffee machine to make some instant porridge.

Although one TikTok user also pointed out that the coffee machine isn't washed either.

Guests should also avoid sitting on the upholstered chairs in a hotel room - as they are hiding much more bacteria and dirt than you think.

Even if they look clean, they could be housing bed bugs, viruses and mould.

Experts have explained that because they are hard to clean properly, unlike bedding and towels which are washed at a high heat, they hold a range of germs that can make you sick.

With cleaning staff also being short on time when cleaning an entire room between guests, the comfortable chair often gets overlooked.

Dr. Nidhi Ghildayal, PhD, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health,  why this is.

He said: "Often, stains on chairs are dabbed and rubbed until they are removed, but other germs that are not noticeable to the eye remain."
