However, many of them are dilapidated buildings with no electricity or running water, meaning buyers face a huge bill to return them to working order.

Carrega Ligure, a village in the north of Italy a few hours from Milan, is offering cheap properties that are actually ready to live in.

The tiny hamlet has just 90 residents, with the houses ranging from €10,000 to €20,000, but buyers can also expect low taxes.

One 80sqm two-storey villa which has been renovated and includes a cellar, running water and electricity is on sale for €14,000.

Latronico, a town in the south west of Italy, has even launched an online platform called Your House in Latronico to help buyers.

House prices range from €10,000 to €30,000, but anyone who can invest €20,000 in renovations will pay zero taxes for 10 years, the mayor says.

Properties for sale include a two-storey house with panoramic views, and freshly redone floors and walls for €12,000, while a modernised stone villa in the town square is €32,000.

The village is known as the "village of wellness" not just because pollution levels are near zero in the area, but also due to the local thermal spa complex.
