UK quarantine list: Greece, Switzerland and Czech Republic all at risk of being added

GREECE, Switzerland and the Czech Republic are at risk of being added to the UK's quarantine list.

The UK government has warned countries will be added if their new daily cases rise above 20 per 100,000 over a seven day period.

The 14-day quarantine came in for holidaymakers travelling from Spain on July 25.

France was also added to the quarantine list on August 15 - when an estimated 500,000 Brits were in the country.

On Saturday, Croatia was added to the UK quarantine list following a spike in Covid-19 cases that has seen their seven-day case rate swell to 36.3.

Countries currently at risk of being added to the UK quarantine list next are: Switzerland (19.8), Czech Republic (17.8) and Iceland (16.5).

Data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) shows Greece is currently below the government's threshold reporting 14.2 cases per 100,000 but cases have risen since the end of July.

Greece recorded 264 new cases yesterday - up by 209 the previous day.

The holiday hotspot currently has a total of 8,381 cases of coronavirus.

Portugal was removed from the UK quarantine list after their new daily cases remained under 20 - but are not far behind Greece at 13.9.

Turkey's daily average of cases has slightly increased from 10.8 to 10.9.

Following behind Turkey is the UK, with a seven-day case rate of 10.7.

Italy is still firmly below the threshold of 20 with 7.8 cases per 100,000 - but are bracing for a second Covid-19 spike after the country recorded 1,071 new cases on Saturday.

The government reviews the quarantine list every Thursday.

Travel expert Paul Charles - who tweets the seven-day case rate each day - reckons Greece, Portugal and Turkey are safe for now.

He tweeted: "#Greece very much still in the Green zone so should be okay for #UK tourists wanting to be back by 1st September and avoid #quarantine.

"#Croatia case numbers still worsening. #Switzerland almost in the Red zone."

Since the government announced the travel corridors at the beginning of July a total of 14 countries have been removed.

This includes Spain and France as well as Croatia, Austria, Malta, Belgium, Netherlands, Monaco, Luxembourg, Andorra, Aruba, Trinidad and Tobago, the Bahamas, and Turks and Caicos.

Cases in France (33.5) and Spain (92.1) are yet to fall and it is unlikely they will be taken off the quarantine list anytime soon.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has previously said: "And in order to put a country back in to the travel corridor, what we say is it needs to stay below that number for a couple of cycles. So a cycle is two weeks long for coronavirus."

A total of six countries have been added to the 'safe list' and include: Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania, St Vincent and the Grenadines.

British holiday makers have been warned to ‘only travel if you can quarantine’ after 20,000 were estimated to be on holiday in the Croatia when it was added to the list.

The Transport Secretary tweeted last week: "Data shows we need to remove Croatia, Austria and Trinidad & Tobago from our list of #coronavirus Travel Corridors to keep infection rates DOWN.

"If you arrive in the UK after 0400 Saturday from these destinations, you will need to self-isolate for 14 days.

"Data also shows we can now add Portugal to those countries INCLUDED in Travel Corridors.

"As with all air bridge countries, please be aware that things can change quickly.

"Only travel if you are content to unexpectedly 14-day quarantine if required (I speak from experience!)"
