London City Airport to resume flights this month with passengers checked for coronavirus and staff in face masks
LONDON City Airport will reopen by the end of the month for domestic flights - with temperature checks and staff in face masks.
The airport, which handles around 5.1million passengers a year, is hoping to resume international flights early next month depending on the controversial proposed quarantine rules.
New rules being enforced by the UK government will mean passengers have to quarantine for 14 days when entering the country from June 8.
All flights have been grounded from the airport since March 25 due to the pandemic.
In the latest statement from London City Airport, they explain: "With more details to be announced alongside airline partners shortly, it is expected that domestic services to key UK cities and regions will begin first.
"International flights are expected to follow in early July, although the exact timing may depend on the proposed quarantine of passengers arriving into the UK."
Robert Sinclair, CEO at London City Airport, admitted that there were "many challenges ahead" for the aviation industry, but added: "We will give people the confidence to fly from our airport to destinations across the UK and Europe."
They have also announced many of the new measures being put into place at the airport to ensure passengers remain safe.
They added: "A whole range of steps have been taken to provide reassurance to passengers including installing Temperature Checking Technology both on departure and arrival, providing staff with face masks and visors and providing clear instructional signage for every step of the journey.
"The airport will also deploy rigorous and thorough cleaning regiments, including the use of an anti-bacterial surface treatment which will begin to kill all germs upon contact and lasts for up to 12 months."
Passengers will be asked to continue social distancing, while new technology will be used to help manage busy areas and redirect them to quieter areas.

Ministers are also considering a 20-minute coronavirus check at the airport in place of the quarantine ahead of the holiday season.
Airlines have already begun resuming their flight schedule - Wizz Air were the first to launch routes to Europe last month, while easyJet are launching international flights next month.
British Airways and Ryanair will also resume a limited schedule in July.
