Best value holiday destinations for 2020 including Bulgaria – but Italy among ones you should avoid
THE best value destinations for 2020 holidays have been revealed and if you're looking for a cheap drink, head to Bulgaria.
But if your holidays are all about eating out, you should probably think twice about going to Italy's Sorrento where the average meal costs more than in New York.
The value destinations were named in a new report, published by the , which breaks down the average cost of things people buy on holiday.
This includes a cup of coffee, a bottle of beer, a soft drink, a glass of wine, a bottle of water, a three-course meal for two, and sun-cream along with insect repellent.
Turkey, Portugal and Spain all came out as bargain breaks when it comes to eating and drinking abroad, meaning you can keep costs down.
But Sunny Beach in Bulgaria beat most destinations easily, with all of the items costing just £30.68.
The region remains the cheapest following last year's report, with the overall cost dropping in price for 2020.
This was followed by Marmaris in Turkey (£44.15), Tokyo in Japan (£48.21) and the Algarve in Portugal (£49.87).
The Costa del Sol in Spain and Prague in the Czech Republic both cost less than £64 overall.
Many of the most expensive destinations were long haul.
You're best to avoid Mahe in the Seychelles - which came out to a whopping £165.10.
Dubai, Barbados and Abu Dhabi were all over £100, along with Jamaica and Vancouver.
For a long haul break that won't cost you a fortune once you get there, try Tokyo, Cape Town or Hoi An in Vietnam.
Surprisingly, Sorrento in Italy was the worst place for value in Europe - a three-course meal would cost you more than one in New York, traditionally known as one of the most expensive cities for holidays.
The report found that 85 per cent of currencies have fallen against the pound, meaning sterling will go further on holidays this year.
Post Office Travel Money Head of Travel Nick Boden said: "In Europe the best deals are likely to be in Bulgaria, Turkey and Portugal, while further afield Japan, Vietnam and Bali are looking good bets for the bargain-hunter."
The study last year found that the south of France was the worst for cheap booze - costing 342 per cent more than Bulgaria for wine and 238 per cent more than beer.
