UK General Election
Rishi Sunak has called an early UK general election for Thursday 4 July. The PM made the announcement on May 22 outside 10 Downing Street. The Conservatives have been in power since David Cameron succeeded Gordon Brown in 2010, with Sunak being the fifth PM after Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson and Liz Truss. Sir Keir Starmer has been leader of the opposition since succeeding Jeremy Corbyn in April 2020.
