APPLE’S first “pro” iPhone is official, and it’s possibly the most powerful smartphone ever made.

The Sun was given an early chance to play with the premium gadget – and the new iPhone 11 Pro looks certain to be a smasher.

Apple’s “Pro” products aren’t a new concept: the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro have both been around for years.

These products are designed for people who want the most powerful kit on the market – and will pay top whack to get it.

Now the iPhone has joined the “Pro” range with the new iPhone 11 Pro (5.8 inches) and iPhone 11 Pro Max (6.5 inches).

And unsurprisingly, they’re an incredible pair of gadgets with extra special features.

For a start, both models come fitted with the new Super Retina XDR display.

It’s the best and brightest display ever featured on an iPhone, and it looks fantastic in person.

The handsets are also equipped with Apple’s new A13 Bionic chip, which is faster and more efficient than all previous processors to date.

Apple reckons it’s the most powerful smartphone chip on the market, and that’s not surprising given how class-leading last year’s A12 processor was.

A battery life boost is promised as a result. Expect four to five more hours from Pro models, according to Apple estimates.

But processors and screens are just side orders to the main dish: the camera.

For the first time, Apple has equipped its top-end iPhone with a triple camera.

This “pro-level camera experience” includes an ultra-wide lens, a wide lens and a telephoto lens.

It means you get impressively wide shots that have stunning levels of detail.

There’s also a new Night Mode that kicks in when Apple’s camera senses low ambient light.

It captures a bright photo without using flash – a similar effect to Night Sight on Google Pixel phones.

Apple has also created a system called Deep Fusion to take pro-grade photos.

It snaps several images at once, then takes the best bits of each by analysing millions of pixels. You then end up with the best image possible.

And of course Apple’s new iPhone comes with the latest iOS 13 software.

This adds Dark Mode for using your phone at night, an improved Apple Maps, and a private email-protected way of signing up to websites.

Design of the phones hasn't changed much, but there are now matte colour options – and an attractive "Midnight Green".

So how much will all this premium fare cost?

The iPhone 11 Pro starts at £1,049, while the bigger Pro Max costs £1,149.

It’s a slight increase on last year’s model – by £50.

Is it worth the cost? It’s hard to say until we’ve done a full review.

We were very impressed by last year’s round of iPhones, and thought they were worth the money.

The camera upgrades this time around seem particularly impressive, and the battery life boost for the Pro models is huge.

So for gadget fans, a £50 premium is easily justified.
