Is super-fast 5G in YOUR area? Here’s how to find out if you can get next-gen internet
SUPER-FAST 5G is finally here – but what is it, and does it cover your area?
Only two network providers, EE and Vodafone, offer 5G services in the UK for now, and each operates in select cities.
We've put together a guide below to help you find out whether you're covered where you live.
What is 5G?
There is no official definition of 5G but it is thought to be similar to its predecessors, 3G and 4G.
It will be a wireless connection built specifically to give devices – like your mobile phone or tablet – a faster and more reliable internet connection.
The “G” in 5G stands for “generation” – that’s why it is known as “next-generation technology”.
The Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) has stated 5G needs to feature higher speeds.
This will mean 5G will be able to carry more data which therefore provides greater coverage.
Companies such as BT, Vodaphone and Nokia have also given the development of 5G their support.
How do I check if EE's 5G network covers my area?
EE powered up its 5G service on May 30.
The service launched in London, Cardiff, Belfast, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Manchester.

This will include the “busiest parts” of Bristol, Coventry, Glasgow, Hull, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield.
How do I check if Vodafone's 5G network covers my area?
Vodafone turned on its 5G network on July 3.
Vodafone currently only serves seven cities across the UK – and only select areas in those cities.
You'll need to live in London, Bristol, Cardiff, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester or Glasgow to benefit from Vodafone's 5G.
